“What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Don’t complain.”
Maya Angelou, Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now

Definition of Complain – express dissatisfaction or annoyance about a state of affairs or an event.

Have you ever thought to yourself, I have every right to complain!

What gives you that right to complain? Life and people! Things may happen that you are dissatisfied or annoyed with and for the most part it involves people and life situations. A few of those things are, the husband didn’t help with the kids, the kids don’t pick up after themselves, not enough money, always paying bills, my job is not paying me what I’m worth, people don’t like me, family problems, and the list goes on and on. Many of us are complaining about more things than we need to because there is always something that we are dissatisfied with or doesn’t seem fair.

I really saw myself as a complainer when I was given some news at work and it spiraled out of control in my mind. I spent my share of time voicing my complaint, in my nice tone of voice. However, it doesn’t matter how nice you say it, you are still complaining.

What starts the complaining? It’s how you perceive the information or situation, if we see it as negative the complaining starts. Negativism fuels the complaining because it goes against everything we perceive as fair or self-satisfying, and we don’t like it but we won’t change it. We can turn a great privilege into a complaint, because it cost us something.

The wife wants help with the kids because it’s overwhelming and the husband doesn’t have the time. How can they compromise? Well, it starts with “let’s sit down and talk”. No one will get everything they want but each can get something if they discard negativity and selfishness. If you want to have a better salary “grow yourself” so you can find a better job. If you don’t like paying bills become debt free by taking baby steps.

The point I want you to see is that you will have challenges, you must see beyond the status quo, if you don’t like it change it! But don’t stay in a life of constant complaining. There is a better and more compromising way, and you can find it.
